Governor Wolf Announces Emergency Proclamation, Travel Restrictions Ahead of Winter Storm

Harrisburg, PA – Governor Tom Wolf today signed a Proclamation of Disaster Emergency in anticipation of a significant winter snowstorm that will impact the state starting Monday evening through late Tuesday, and announced PennDOT and the Turnpike will restrict speeds on interstates and some large commercial vehicular travel. Governor Wolf also announced that PennDOT will strategically deploy additional assets to areas expected to be hardest hit by the storm, including the Northeast, Poconos and Lehigh Valley.

Trenton, NJ – In preparation for Winter Storm Stella expected to arrive in New Jersey tonight, Governor Chris Christie declared a State of Emergency, authorizing the State Director of Emergency Management to activate and coordinate the preparation, response and recovery efforts for the storm with all county and municipal emergency operations and governmental agencies. Commuters are asked to use extreme caution while traveling across the state.

“This severe winter storm is expected to produce tonight through Tuesday afternoon significant snow accumulations, winds gusting up to 60 miles per hour, freezing temperatures, widespread coastal flooding and hazardous whiteout travel conditions,” Governor Christie said. “During these threatening conditions, I urge all New Jerseyans to remain off the roads so our first responders and public safety officers can safely and efficiently handle emergency situations.”

New Jersey roads are expected to be impassable due to significant amounts of heavy, blowing, and drifting snow, low visibility and whiteout conditions, with the highest impact expected from late Monday night through Tuesday afternoon. Forecasted snow accumulations from five to more than 20 inches are expected in some areas of the state.

Due to the severe winter storm, the State of New Jersey has authorized the closing of state offices on Tuesday, March 14 for all non-essential employees. Essential employees should report to work on their regular schedule.

TRAVEL BAN

GOV. MALLOY LIFTS STATEWIDE TRAVEL BAN EFFECTIVE AT 5PM TODAY, ENCOURAGES RESIDENTS TO REMAIN OFF ROADS IF POSSIBLE

(HARTFORD, CT) – Governor Dannel P. Malloy announced this afternoon that the travel ban on state roads that went into effect early this morning will be lifted effective at 5:00 p.m. today, but he is still urging motorists to stay off the roads if possible this evening as conditions remain treacherous.

“By limiting travel on state roads to only essential personnel, we dramatically reduced the potential for accidents and it has provided road crews with much greater access to clear the roads faster,” Governor Malloy said.  “As the storm begins to taper off, we will be lifting the ban effective at 5 p.m. today, however I want to stress that residents are still strongly advised to stay off the roads if at all possible.  DOT crews are still clearing snow from many roads, and black ice continues to be a concern.  If you absolutely do not need to travel, stay where you are this evening.  Again, I want to thank all of the residents of our great state for heeding the warnings and staying safe during this storm.”
