SUMMARY 8/14/2021 (from DHS CISA)
As of 0500 ET, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) reports Tropical Depression (TD) Fred is moving west-northwest, passing the western portion of the lower Florida Keys this afternoon. The system is located approximately 90 miles south of Key West, Florida. TD Fred is moving at 13 mph with maximum sustained winds at 35 mph. 
 
Key Points:   

  • TD Fred is expected to turn to the northwest tonight, followed by a northward movement by Sunday night.  
    • Pass near the Florida Keys this afternoon and move along the eastern Gulf of Mexico tonight till Monday. 
  • Slow strengthening is expected as Fred could become a tropical storm again by tonight or Sunday.  
  • Starting this afternoon, a tornado or two may be possible along portions of central and southern Florida. 
  • Tropical storm conditions are expected in the lower Florida Keys on Saturday  
  • Heavy rainfall could lead to minor flooding across west Florida and worsen ongoing minor to moderate flooding in the northern peninsula. 
  • The Governor of Florida issued a state of emergency for 23 counties.
